The Coalition of Civically Engaged Educators
“Education, in a great measure, forms the moral character of citizens, and moral character along with laws and institutions forms the basis of democratic government.”
― Amy Gutmann, Democratic Education―
Sowing the seeds of democratic citizenship
The Coalition of Civically Engaged Educators is a community of practice devoted to the teaching of civic knowledge, values, and behaviors. We are non-partisan and non-profit. Our membership consists of Pre-K to High School teachers, as well as educators at non-profit organizations and after school programs.

With the guidance of its Educator Advisory Team, CCEE has created a definition of "civic education" in which educators help students explore themselves, and their connection to the world, through the development of five relationships.

"For me, being a part of CCEE drives home the truth that the work of education simply can’t be done alone. Being part of this community has already challenged and expanded my thinking, offered me learning opportunities I wouldn’t have elsewhere, and brought fellowship and comfort in a time when real connection can feel difficult. And most important, the commitment of these educators is holding me accountable to act in alignment with civic values in my everyday work."

"CCEE is filled with insightful educators sharing resources and ideas. This has been especially useful during a historic time of pandemic related teaching upheaval. I have found digital resources that can support my students. I also appreciate the ongoing positivity of this platform that shares the goal of educators providing opportunity and skills for students to analyze the world as it is and make the necessary changes to improve it for all."
"CCEE is an organization that is coming up with possible solutions for teaching critical issues. As a group, we come from all over. We are from different cultures, regions, backgrounds, and belief systems. Yet we come together to collaborate, share ideas, and educate ourselves to be better educators for our students. The work we are doing is necessary and meaningful. I have learned so much, but I know we still have a lot of work to do."

"CCEE is an awesome organization that gives opportunities to connect with like-minded educators all across the country. It has also provided a platform for my co-facilitator and I to lead a new workshop. There’s not enough interest in my school district for this particular workshop; CCEE allows me to practice and grow my skills with other curious, justice-minded folks virtually. I really appreciate the connections that are formed through this work!"

"CCEE is the essence of a professional learning community. A hub of knowledge, CCEE offers members easy access to professional learning opportunities as well as the expertise of educators engaged in similar work. Equal parts inspiration and problem-solving, Pablo Wolfe facilitates connections across geographical divides, broadening collaboration opportunities and connecting colleagues whose expertise would not otherwise be accessible. So grateful for this community!"

"To me, the most striking thing about CCEE is its emphasis on cross-disciplinary collaboration and conversation. This is not just a community of social studies educators: it's a working group of people from every subject area who want to collaborate in building more just learning ecosystems that reflect the experiences of all students. This is the cornerstone not just of democratic classrooms, but of fully democratic communities."
